Flooded Basement!

A month or so ago we noticed water leaking up through some cracks in our basement. Nothing really to worry about, just a bit of extra moisture on the floor. There was a spot or two where it was more than just moist, but mostly we didn't worry a whole lot about it. We did lose a box or two that was sitting on the floor in the wettest parts, and decided we should make an effort to get everything off the floor and onto pallets. Most of it already was, but there were a few things that needed some more work.

It's official. We're really glad we did that! After this most recent storm that came through, our basement had standing water all throughout. At least an inch and a half. I had asked Mark if he would be willing to check on the basement for me a few times before. I just liked to know that all was ok down there since it has most of our storage. This time didn't seem like it would be any different, but when Mark got down to the bottom of the stairs and said 'oh boy, I'm going to need some boots,' I knew it was going to be an adventure!

Here's Mark standing in the water in our basement

I'm not sure if you can tell how much that is, but for our non-flood-zone area, that's a lot of water.

Yup, an adventure!

Watching the weather report later that night we learned that this has been the wettest May on record - 5.41 inches. And it's also been the second wettest month EVER. The wettest month was back in Sept of 1964 or something close to that year.

On average Utah gets about 12-16 inches of moisture per year, so we managed to get 1/3 of that amount in one month. It's been a crazy wet Spring! There was also SNOW on the Y on Memorial Day. Not just the mountain with the Y on it, but on the actual Y... We are in for some interesting times when all that snow starts coming off the mountains.
